MARBELLA - NAGÜELES
Nagüeles is a district of Marbella. Its full name is Rocio de Nagüeles and is located mainly on the upper side of the A-7 coastal motorway at the point where is it is the by-pass around Marbella. Nagüeles comprises of a many well established villas in leafy gently sloping roads with mature trees.
Some of the earlier and larger villas are hidden away in the south part. Many are build on some of the larger plots found in Marbella centre and some are single storey. Cortijo de Nagüeles is the zone next door which borders the Golden Mile. The nice Playa below is called “ Playa de Nagüeles”.
NAGÜELES PARK.
A wonderful 10.000 hectare park of pine, carob and olive trees. The park is complete with recreation area with stone picnic tables and benches and barbeque stations. There is a youth hostal, children's playground and a small hermitage chapel in honour of St Barnabé the patron saint of Marbella. This is where the annual St Barnabé pilgrimage takes place.
NAGÜELES QUARRY
At the top of Nagüeles near the park is located the Nagüeles Quarry. It is recorded that the stone to build Marbella's main church Nuesta Senora de la Encarnacion and the magnificent main entrance ‘sun' door from the quarry ‘quarter of a league away'. Years late in the XVIII century, José Gómez y Miguel Carrera, master masons working on the Malaga Cathedral shipped stone from Nagüeles. The best known use of the quarry used to be the source of the stone for the construction of Puerto Banús. Nowadays it is for the famous Starlite Festivale which takes place every July / August.
